Summer is almost here, and soon it will be time to fire up your home cooling system. But what if it doesn’t respond to the call to active duty?

Don’t worry – our technicians are here to help. But before you contact us for service, it pays to do a little troubleshooting: sometimes the problem has a simple solution you can handle yourself without paying for a house call.

Here are a few things to check:

If your AC system isn’t running at all:

  1. Make sure your thermostat setting is:
    • Set for “air conditioning”, “cool,” or “fan”
    • Set for at least 5 degrees cooler than the current room temperature
  2. Make sure no circuit breakers are tripped.
    • A circuit breaker “trips” (shuts off) to cut the flow of electricity and prevent a circuit from overloading and causing a fire. This is a common problem when your A/C is running full tilt. Reset the breaker and try the system again.
  3. Make sure all power switches are turned on.
    • Look for any switches that might affect the unit’s outdoor or indoor components.

If none of these measures works, contact Walton for service.

If your AC system doesn’t blow cool air:

  1. Make sure your thermostat is set properly (see #1 above).
  2. Make sure all vents are open and unblocked.
  3. Check the outdoor unit to see if it’s running. If it isn’t:
    • Check the power switch (see above).
    • Check the condenser’s circuit breaker (see above).
    • Check for debris inside the condenser (TURN OFF THE POWER FIRST!).
  4. Check the indoor unit.
  5. Make sure the power switches are on.
  6. Check your air filters; if they’re clogged, clean or replace them and try again.

If none of these measures works, contact Walton for service.

If your air conditioner doesn’t work, don’t panic – Walton has you covered with expert repair and maintenance services for just about any cooling system. And if it’s time to replace your A/C with a new, high-efficiency unit, we can do that, too.
